We have had an unusual number of brown stain queries from the healthcare sector in the recent weeks. The culprit appears to be an old standby: chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG). We believe that healthcare facilities are using a number of convenient new single application packages, thus increasing CHG exposure in the laundry. Simply stated, the problem develops when CHG antimicrobial residues come in contact with chlorine solutions generating a fast, or irreversible, brown stain. Although there are a number of reclamation formulas for removing the brown stains, the general consensus is that it is not possible to completely remove a brown stain once is has been generated. We have now identified a method to remove the CHG ahead of setting a stain with sodium hypochlorite. This allows healthcare facilities to accommodate staff choice to use chlorhexidine as an antimicrobial, and maintain sanitation of linen claims with chlorine bleach.
