Iowa Gov. Chet Culver signed House File 823 requiring public schools, community colleges, institutions under control of the state board, and state agencies to comply with a green cleaning and maintenance policy. The state's Department of Administrative Services will provide information on what environmentally preferable products can be used. Facilities must conduct an evaluation and assessment regarding the implementation of a green cleaning program and start using green products by July 12, 2010. However, departments can deplete existing first and then institute the new requirements when procuring products for the following year.

The Rhode Island General Assembly is proposing legislation that would mandate green cleaning in all public and private K-12 schools. The bill would require school cleaning programs to use green equipment, paper products and chemicals, including glass cleaners, restroom cleaners, carpet cleaners and general-purpose cleaners. Products will need to be certified by Green Seal, EcoLogo, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Design for Environment (DfE) program or other similar third-party certifiers.
Schools would have the opportunity to use existing supplies before being required to purchase green products.

A minor-league pitcher in his younger days, Richard Armbruster kept playing baseball recreationally into his 70s, until his right hip started bothering him. Last February he went to a St. Louis hospital for what was to be a routine hip replacement.
By late March, Mr. Armbruster, then 78, was dead. After a series of postsurgical complications, the final blow was a bloodstream infection that sent him into shock and resisted treatment with antibiotics.

Following the same path taken by neighboring Illinois, Wisconsin may be the next state to mandate the use of green cleaning products and processes in public educational buildings and municipalities.
The "Green Cleaning For A Healthier Wisconsin" bill, proposed by Rep. Cory Mason, D-Racine, Wis., would require public educational buildings to use cleaning and paper products certified as environmentally sensitive by third-party certifiers, including Green Seal, EcoLogo, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Design for the Environment Program (DfE), Greenguard Environmental Institute and the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI).
